The boom in running has been plain to see. While it owes itself in large part to the COVID-19 pandemic, many turning to the sport to provide respite from lockdown conditions, it’s been further proliferated by social media and the rise of “runfluencers”, many of whom make the sport look a little more fun than it actually is! But another influence is undoubtedly the innovation in running shoe technology we’ve seen in recent years. In stark contrast to the minimalist approach, these days running shoes have gotten bigger, more cushioned, and frankly more fun. The rise in maximalist trainers has opened the sport up to individuals who may have previously considered it “too impactful.” And the bouncy, propulsive, carbon-packed midsoles have made running — especially at pace — a more enjoyable experience. While these new technologies are accompanied by high prices, the number of brands producing excellent quality shoes has expanded significantly, resulting in a much wider selection of last season’s trainers hitting the market at bargain prices. For the vast majority of runners, last season’s — or even the season before’s! — running shoe tech is more than sufficient. As I like to think of it, if they were the best of the bunch last year, they’re certainly more than good enough for me this year! We’ve put together this ultimate guide to running shoe sales to help you find the best deals on all kinds of running shoes. But be quick, they won’t stick around forever.
Discounted Running Shoes for Everyday Mileage
New Balance Fresh Foam X 1080v14
With the release of the FreshFoam X 1080v15, last season’s shoe is now available for under £99. It’s one of the best daily trainers in the game. Offering unmistakably Fresh Foam X softness, though slightly firmer than v13, v14 adds a touch more durability and becomes even more versatile. Perfect for everything from recovery through to progressive long runs.

Technical Specifications
- 38/32mm Stack Height
- 6mm Heel-to-Toe Drop
- 298g
- RRP £159.99
Hoka Mach 6
As a lightweight daily trainer that can also handle uptempo miles, the Hoka Mach 6 was one of our favourite shoes when it first released. While in today’s landscape, the Mach 6’s 37/32mm stack height might be considered “thin”, we think it packs the perfect amount of foam. Pick it up for your local parkrun, or use it (as we did) for a 26-kilometre long run straight out of the box. It’s capable, peppy, protective, and fun. As the newest edition — the Mach 7 — has just launched, the Mach 6 can now be found for under £70.

Technical Specifications
- 37/32mm Stack Height
- 5mm Heel-to-Toe Drop
- 232g
- RRP £139.99
Brooks Glycerin 22
The Brooks Glycerin needs no introduction. It’s one of, if not the, most popular and best-selling of Brooks’ entire catalogue. What might need an introduction, however, is its new DNA Tuned midsole. It’s an innovative, nitrogen-infused bed of cushioning that contains larger cells at the heels for soft landings, and smaller cells at the forefoot to encourage energising toe-offs. The newer Glycerin 23 features minimal changes, so now’s the perfect time to grab a pair of the 22s.

Technical Specifications
- 38/28mm Stack Height
- 10mm Heel-to-Toe Drop
- 289g
- RRP £165
ASICS Gel-Nimbus 27
While the Gel-Nimbus 28 is lighter and more versatile than the 27, that’s likely to rile up a few folks. The Gel-Nimbus has always been ASICS’ recovery day option, offering maximum, pillowy cushioning. So if you’re after what might be ASICS’ last true Gel-Nimbus, the 27 is a no-brainer — particularly when you see just how much cheaper it is!

Technical Specifications
- 43.5/35.5mm Stack Height
- 8mm Heel-to-Toe Drop
- 305g
- RRP £180
Puma Deviate Nitro 3
Still for everyday training, but putting a bit more pep in your step, Puma really started to cook with the introduction of the Deviate Nitro — and Nitro Elite — 3. Featuring PWRPLATE technology and NITRO foam, this highly responsive trainer delivers a snappy ride, infusing speed into every stride.

Technical Specifications
- 39/29mm Stack Height
- 10mm Heel-to-Toe Drop
- 220g
- RRP £149.99
Saucony Triumph 23
The fact that people have been running in the Triumph for 20+ years speaks volumes to its success. It’s Saucony’s neutral cushioned running shoe designed for cruising comfort over long miles. Packed with PWRUN PB, it’s a highly versatile trainer that will see you through the distance no matter your pace.

Technical Specifications
- 37/27mm Stack Height
- 10mm Heel-to-Toe Drop
- 263g
- RRP £169.99
Mizuno Neo Zen
We recently reviewed the newly released Neo Zen 2, and while it may have strayed considerably from the original, we think it’s an excellent daily trainer. The first iteration of the Neo Zen was held in high regard. It’s soft, bouncy, and a lot of fun. If that’s the type of shoe you’re after, you can now pick up a pair for less than £70.

Technical Specifications
- 39.5/33.5mm Stack Height
- 6mm Heel-to-Toe Drop
- 200g
- RRP £129.99
Great Value Shoes for Speed Workouts
Saucony Endorphin Speed 5
A fan favourite originally designed as an up-tempo shoe, it’s quickly proven to be much more. The Endorphin Speed 5 is equally capable during long, moderate training sessions as it is sprints to the finish. What’s more, Saucony brought back some retro styling — and we think it’s one of the best-looking (and performing) shoes on the market.

Technical Specifications
- 36/28mm Stack Height
- 8mm Heel-to-Toe Drop
- 237g
- RRP £179.99
Nike Streakfly 2
Unbelievably lightweight at just 145g, the Streakfly 2 is purpose-built to deliver raw speed and ultra-responsive cushioning. While technically a specialised shorter distance (5/10K) racer, it’s also ideal to help you perform during fast intervals or tempo training sessions.

Technical Specifications
- 27/23mm Stack Height
- 4mm Heel-to-Toe Drop
- 145g
- RRP £164.99
ASICS Magic Speed 4
The Magic Speed 4 is designed to support your racing goals. It is ideal as a training shoe, for tempo runs and a fast shoe that is versatile for all distances. It changed significantly from V3, adding more stack, a stiffer plate, and a stronger rocker. The V5 changed less, so now’s a great time to add them to the rotation.

Technical Specifications
- 43.5/35.5mm Stack Height
- 8mm Heel-to-Toe Drop
- 207g
- RRP £159.99
Adidas Takumi Sen 10
Similarly to the Streakfly, the Takumi Sen is Adidas’ short(er) distance racer. It’s also capable of so much more. Lightning-quick Lightstrike cushioning keeps you light on your feet down to the finish line, while ENERGYRODS limit energy loss so you can maintain your pace. For runners who never stop chasing faster, Adizero Takumi Sen is the shoe that never stops innovating speed.

Technical Specifications
- 33/26mm Stack Height
- 7mm Heel-to-Toe Drop
- 165g
- RRP £169.99
Bargain Race Day Running Shoes
Carbon plated racers and cheap don’t typically go hand-in-hand. One of our favourite shoes, the Hoka Cielo-X1, is a bank-breaking £250, and the prices are only increasing with each new technology (the Pro Evo 2 is a staggering £450). But, as we mentioned in the introduction, the number of brands now producing top-of-the-line race day trainers has increased dramatically in recent years. Consequently, there are more deals to be had than ever before.
If it’s race day trainers you’re after, we recently published our 2026 edition of the best carbon-plated race day shoes under £140. Below are a few more examples.
Saucony Endorphin Elite 2
Currently available for £149.99 (depending on your size), it might seem strange to call this one a bargain. But when the Endorphin Elite 2 released, it would set you back a staggering £279.99. The Elite 2 marked a substantial shift from the original iteration. It was, if we’re being honest, the antithesis of that shoe. Where V1 was a firm racer, V2 is perhaps the softest shoe on the market. When reviewers refer to shoes as being “marshmallow soft”, they’re probably picturing the Elite 2 whose midsole really does resemble such. Trust us, this is one shoe you definitely don’t want to go for a walk in.
This revolutionary shoe features incrediRUN foam for unmatched energy return and responsiveness. The full-length, slotted carbon-fibre plate ensures a smooth underfoot transition with a propulsive feel. As Saucony’s most aggressive race-day performer yet, the Endorphin Elite 2 equips you with the confidence that no one in the field is better prepared or better equipped.

Technical Specifications
- 39.5/31.5mm Stack Height
- 8mm Heel-to-Toe Drop
- 199g
- RRP £279.99
Hoka Cielo X1 2.0
A tip-of-the-spear product tuned for higher tempo pickups, the Cielo X1 2.0 is a must for speed seekers. Engineered with an aggressive forefoot rocker and ultra-responsive dual-density PEBA midsole with snappy carbon fibre plate, this pace-pushing road racer has been finished with a light, breathable upper.
The original Cielo X1 was once our favourite super shoe, only recently outdone by the recent release of the Puma Deviate Nitro Elite 4. X1 2.0 might be named poorly, but beware, it’s anything but a joke. From most reviews, the 2.0’s aggression is best-suited to shorter distances.

Technical Specifications
- 46/39 Stack Height
- 7mm Heel-to-Toe Drop
- 229g
- RRP £249.99
Saucony Endorphin Pro 4
We can hardly believe the value currently on offer with the Endorphin Pro 4. For £129.99 (down from £229.99), it’s a lot of shoe for the money. More than that, it’s a super shoe for the masses. It’ll provide the pop you need on race day, but not at the expense of comfort, stability, or support. With Saucony’s much-loved PWRRUN PB and PWRRUN HG foam, a propulsive carbon-fibre plate, and (again) Saucony’s retro colourways, we think this is the steal of the century.

Technical Specifications
- 39.5/31.5mm Stack Height
- 8mm Heel-to-Toe Drop
- 212g
- RRP £229.99
